Frequently Asked Questions

  1. The courses that I’ve taken are not listed in the Transfer Credit Guide. Does that mean I won’t receive credit for them?

No. If a course does not appear in the Transfer Credit Guide, it means that it has not been assessed for transfer credit. Any course not awarded transfer credit will have "No Credit" displayed in the search results. Contact the Receiving Institution regarding transfer possibilities. You may be required to provide extra information, such as course outlines, for transfer credit to be considered.

The Transfer Credit Guide is currently under development, and information is still being added to the database.

  2. Who should I talk to if I have questions about the transfer process?

An advisor at your current institution can answer questions about taking a course at another institution for transfer to your program and how it will fit into your academic goals.

If you have questions about applying to a specific program at a Receiving Institution, contact that institution’s Admission or Recruitment Office directly. See Contact Information.

An institution’s calendar is also a very useful resource. It outlines the admission criteria, transfer policies, program requirements, and other rules that students are responsible for knowing.

  3. If all of the courses that I’ve taken are listed in the Transfer Credit Guide, are there any reasons why I might NOT receive transfer credit?

Yes, there are a few reasons. Taking duplicate courses (two different courses that essentially offer the same content), taking the course too long ago, not receiving the required minimum grade, or not meeting the residency requirement are all reasons why you might not get transfer credit. Furthermore, a course may not fit your program. See What Will Transfer and What Won’t above for more details.

Keep in mind that the Transfer Credit Guide is a tool to help you co-ordinate your educational transfers. The Receiving Institution always has the final say as to whether it will grant transfer credit.

  4. I took some courses 12 years ago. Will they still transfer?

The date range or effective period in the search results will tell you whether the course is valid for a certain time period. In addition, transferability also depends on the institution and program that you applying to. Some academic programs will not grant credit for courses after a certain length of time. Please check with the Receiving Institution regarding its policy.

  5. Is there a minimum grade required for transferring a course?

Check with the Receiving Institution to see its policy . Not all Receiving Institutions will accept a minimal passing grade on transfer courses.

  6. Can I transfer from a university outside of Saskatchewan to a degree-granting institution in Saskatchewan?

Generally, universities in Canada will accept each other's courses for transfer, provided that they fit within the student's degree program and have been completed within a certain time period, with a final grade that meets the institution's minimum grade requirement for transfer credit. Transfer credit is assessed on an individual basis once students apply to the university. For more information, contact the Admission Office at the institution that you want to attend.

  7. Can I transfer from a technical institute like SIAST and receive credit towards a degree program?

Yes. Some programs and courses offered at SIAST will receive credit towards a degree program at the universities or Briercrest College.

  8. I'm enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts program at the University of Saskatchewan, and I want to take one of my courses through Briercrest College. The Transfer Credit Guide says that the Briercrest course that I want to take is transferable to the U of S. Will I automatically receive credit at the U of S once I've completed the course?

You must receive permission from the University of Saskatchewan before you register in the Briercrest course. You will be issued a letter of permission stating that credit that will be granted upon receipt of a transcript confirming successful completion of the course. If you do not receive authorization prior to taking the course, you may be denied transfer credit. Contact your program advisor or the Admission Office at the U of S for further information.

  9. Who makes the decision on what credit will transfer?

Granting transfer credit is at the discretion of the Receiving Institution.
