Transfer Information

Credit transfer is granted when the Receiving Institution recognizes education completed at another institution. By taking advantage of transfer credit opportunities, students can pursue an academic program by combining studies at different institutions within Saskatchewan, either sequentially or concurrently.

A student can begin studying at one institution and then transfer to another institution to finish an academic program. If admitted and the completed courses are comparable, a student can use these earned credits to fulfill some of the program requirements for the credential. A student can also take a combination of courses at different post-secondary institutions in Saskatchewan to complete an academic program. On the completion of appropriate courses, a student can transfer credits to the Receiving Institution.

What Will Transfer and What Won’t?

Transfer credit is based on course equivalency and established program agreements. If the courses match the content of the program that the student is applying to, transfer credit may be granted. Use the Transfer Credit Guide to search for information on the transferability of specific courses or programs.

Transfer credit is awarded at the discretion of the Receiving Institution. Certain factors may limit the transfer of an academic credit, including:

  1. Residency requirement - Most institutions require a student to complete a specific number of credits at their institution in order to award a degree. How many and what courses must be completed at the Receiving Institution vary from program to program.
  2. Minimum grade requirement - A student must pass a course to obtain transfer credit. Some programs and institutions may also require a minimum grade that is higher than a passing grade.
  3. Room in your academic program - The courses that a student wishes to transfer must fulfill the requirements of an academic program. For example, a completed course may be transferable, such as SOCI 123, but if there is not room in the academic program for this course, it will not transfer.
  4. When the course was taken - Some academic programs require that acquired learning be current. Therefore, they will not award credit for courses taken more than 5 (or 8 or 10) years ago.
  5. Course combination - Sometimes a combination of two or more courses is needed to receive transfer credit, e.g. ACCT 100(3) + ACCT 200(3) = Elective (3). A student who only took ACCT 100(3) may not receive credit for it.

To be absolutely certain about transfer credit possibilities, please check with the institutions involved.

Attending Multiple Institutions

If a student is already admitted to a program, he/she should obtain permission to take a course that will transfer to another institution. A student will be issued a letter of permission stating that credit will be granted upon receipt of a transcript confirming successful completion of the course. If authorization is not received prior to taking the course, the student may be denied transfer credit.

Further information

Please contact the institution where you wish to receive transfer credit for further information. See Contacts.
